Whale away
At the time this picture was taken, the London whale was still alive, and rescuers were hoping to transport it down the Thames to the safety of the open sea.
Vigil for Jean Charles
About 200 people attended a vigil for Jean Charles de Menezes on Saturday, six months after he was shot and killed by police in Stockwell tube station, two weeks after the London bombings. The police had misidentified Jean as a terrorist and, having realised their mistake, put out misleading information to the press about the circumstances of his killing
The Crown Prosecution Service is currently considering charges against the officers involved. Jean’s family and their supporters want those responsible identified and held to account. Ideally, they would like to see Sir Iain Blair, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, take ultimate responsibility for the killing and step down.

Quote of the week
“Sure I love my country and everything, but isn’t the fact I complain, mock and am generally cynical towards the nation as a whole on a regular basis enough? Surely that is what it truly means to be British?”
– Stoobieland’s comment on Gordon Brown’s suggestion that a ‘British Day’ be introduced to celebrate ‘Britishness’
